UODO hosts the 77th meeting of the Berlin Group
The 77th meeting of the International Working Group on Data Protection in Technology (Berlin Group) took place in Warsaw on 24-25 June 2026. The meeting was attended by experts from supervisory authorities from many countries around the world, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and a representative of the European Data Protection Supervisor, who discussed the most important challenges related to the protection of privacy and personal data in the context of the development of new technologies.
The meeting was opened by Mirosław Wróblewski, President of the Personal Data Protection Office, who presented the Office's priorities in the area of new technologies, including activities related to artificial intelligence and counteracting threats associated with deepfake technology.
"What distinguishes the Berlin Group is its ability to identify technological challenges early — often before they become the subject of regulation or broad public debate. The documents and positions developed by the Group have for years served as a valuable point of reference for data protection authorities, legislators, and technology providers," emphasized Mirosław Wróblewski.
During the meeting, discussions covered, among other things, the impact of artificial intelligence on the administration of justice, the role of data protection officers in a changing technological environment, and current challenges related to cloud services, biometrics, the Internet of Things, and digital identity. Participants also presented information on the most important initiatives and directions of activities being carried out in their respective countries.
One of the items on the agenda was the adoption of a document on ISAC/6G. Further papers were also discussed, devoted among other things to synthetic data and the processing of data after death, and priority topics for the Group's further work were identified, including deepfakes, agentic AI, age verification, smart glasses, and the monitoring of employees using AI.
During the meeting, members of the Social Team of Experts to the President of the Polish SA also spoke. Prof. Marek Świerczyński presented the work of the Council of Europe on the use of artificial intelligence in the administration of justice, while engineer Tomasz Izydorczyk addressed the challenges posed by new technologies for data protection officers.
After the proceedings concluded, participants visited the headquarters of the Personal Data Protection Office, where they familiarized themselves with the Office's organizational structure and scope of activities, and discussed the issue of combating deepfake content - a challenge facing data protection authorities in an era of rapid development of generative artificial intelligence.
