17th Personal Data Protection Day
"The future of personal data protection in the light of technology development" is the topic of a Poland-wide scientific conference organised as part of the celebration of the 17th Personal Data Protection Day. The Polish SA organises this event on January 31, 2023 in cooperation with the President of the City of Ełk and the Ełk branch of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
This year's conference will be a hybrid event. The organisers have planned on-site events in Ełk, at the headquarters of a branch of the University of Warmia and Mazury, which will also be broadcast on the Internet via the Polish SA’s website. The agenda of this year's celebration of the Personal Data Protection Day includes scientific conference and accompanying events.
Scientific conference
The aim of the conference "The future of personal data protection in the light of technology development" is to present the most important challenges in the area of personal data protection to the controllers that they are going to face in 2023, given the rapid development of new technologies. The five thematic sessions will bring together experts in personal data protection law to address issues related to ensuring effective protection of personal data in various areas of human life, primarily in those where we see an increasing trend to use the latest technological advances also to shape the processing of such data.
Honouring promoters of data protection
An important highlight of the conference will be the Michal Serzycki award ceremony. Michał Serzycki was the Inspector General for the Protection of Personal Data of the third term, who attached great importance to educating the public about personal data protection. The award is given annually to individuals and organisations for their efforts to promote and educate on the protection of personal data, as well as the right to privacy. At the event in Elk we will meet this year's laureates of the award.
Accompanying events
On the same day, as part of the celebration of the 17th Personal Data Protection Day, there will be other events devoted to the protection of personal data in connection with the use of new technologies.
These will include a workshop with students of the Elk branch of the University of Warmia and Mazury on "Personal data protection in the context of cyber threats."
In addition, there will be a workshop with seniors on the protection of personal data when using new technologies.
Both events will be held at the headquarters of the University's branch in Elk.
In turn, at the headquarters of the City Hall in Elk, experts from the Polish SA will provide consultations on personal data protection and conduct a training course for representatives of local governments from the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship.

About Personal Data Protection Day
Personal Data Protection Day was established to commemorate the anniversary of the opening for signature of the oldest piece of international legislation comprehensively regulating personal data protection. The act is the Council of Europe’s Convention 108 of January 28, 1981 for the protection of individuals with regard to automated processing of personal data. Poland became involved in the organisation of Personal Data Protection Day in 2007.
